Congratulations! You just moved into your new home. The boxes are unpacked; the furniture is placed; now all that is left is to make the house your home.
These days, almost every home has that one wall that screams “DECORATE ME”! Typically, the accent wall has an eye catching piece of furniture against it or a feature that came as part of the home. For example, the fireplace and mantle in your living room; the wall in your master bedroom where the bed was placed; your great grandmothers antique piano that is now the center point of the music room.
Most accent walls can be created by simply applying a slightly darker coat of paint that draws your attention to the item you want to put on display. Make sure to stay within the color palette you already have going though. The last thing you want is to have an earth tone palette inside the home with a hot pink accent wall. Or you could even use a textured paint roller to create a faux paint design on the wall rather than painting one wall a different color.
Besides paint, family pictures and artwork are also a quick and easy way to achieve your “accent wall”. You do not have to spend a fortune on artwork or picture frames to create this look either. Your local Wal-Mart, Target, Garden Ridge or At Home store will have hundreds of these items that allow you to achieve this look and stay within budget.
Fireplaces are one of the easiest features of a home to naturally become an “accent wall”. From painting the mantle a different color, adding decorative tile, artwork or stenciling to the wall, or wall mounting your television above the mantel, the options for this home feature are endless.
So get those creative juices flowing; sample ideas from Pinterest, HGTV, Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Visit Home Depot, Lowes or Sherwin Williams and look at color palettes. You have found the house, now it is time to make it your own!
